THE weekend powerboat grand prix at Ramsgate has been hailed a roaring success.
It is estimated that more than 30,000 were in the town on Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the high octane thrills in the British national offshore powerboat competition.
With brilliant sunshine and hot temperatures on both days, people flocked to the town to see the V24 closed canopy Bat Boats, RIB’s and F2’s plough through the waves in perfect racing conditions.
With racing closer to shore than in previous years, spectators on the east pier of the royal harbour and on the main sands were able to enjoy better views of the action on the waves.
Other competition included the K class children’s racing, some of which took place outside of the harbour for the first time, as the waters were so calm, and hovercraft racing from the main sands.
Onshore based entertainment include live music, street entertainment, a food and drink village, a fun fair and a Diana Ross tribute show on the Saturday evening.
Pym brewer, Ramsgate Town Partnership co-ordinator, said: "It was a fantastic event. The town was buzzing and we had so many positive comments about Ramsgate.
"Traders tell us they did very well, with shops, pubs, restaurants and hoteliers enjoying good business.
"One thing that really pleased us was the success of the funfair - the town has not had an attraction like this at the seaside for many years and it was so popular. Perhaps we should have one every summer."
Cllr Mike Roberts, Thanet council cabinet member for maritime services, said: "The attraction of World Cup football during the weekend doesn’t appear to have had any effect on the numbers heading into Ramsgate, which is extremely encouraging."
