MEDWAY's shipbuilding tradition is being relaunched with a new degree in marine engineering.

The University of Greenwich is launching the degree in partnership with the National Sea Training Centre, part of North West Kent College, in Gravesend.

It will be taught at the Chatham Maritime campus close to the historic Chatham Dockyard where Nelson's flagship HMS Victory and many other Royal Navy ships were built.

The degree is designed to prepare students for a professional career in marine engineering, both shore based and at see.

It aims to develop a sound understanding of engineering systems, how they function and typical operational programmes.

Meanwhile, Professor Alan Reed, former head of the university's engineering school, has become director of regional liaison for Kent and Medway.

Prof Reed, 53, has been a pioneer in higher education in the Medway Towns. He will be a key contact for business and community organisations, local councils, government agencies, schools and colleges.

Professor Rick Trainor, university vice chancellor, said: "The university hopes that his appointment will further strengthen partnerships between the university and its neighbours."

He said: "In terms of community support and collaboration, you couldn't have a more encouraging framework than there is in Medway. It's extraordinarily positive. Medway is way ahead of the pack."
