MODERNISATION of a train depot to provide facilities for new rolling stock will create around 200 jobs in a Kent town, it has been revealed.
Construction of the maintenance, train washing and storage depot at Ramsgate will cost about £45 million. It is due to be completed in 2007. The work will not affect passengers, said a Network Rail spokesman.
Stephen Ladyman, MP for Thanet South, said: "The development of these facilities at Ramsgate is a clear sign of the government's commitment to the area.
"The company that will deliver the Integrated Kent Franchise will be announced shortly and the fast trains are on order and will be on line by 2009.
"The new maintenance facilities will mean that local workers will be a key part of keeping Kent's new train services working and comfortable."
