A seagull was saved from death after firefighters rescued it after it got caught up in telegraph pole wires.

The bird had got its wing caught in two wires high in the air and had exhausted itself trying flap its way to freedom.

The creature had got stuck in the wires attached to a pole in Arethusa Road, Rochester, on Monday afternoon and worried people who spotted it, had called in the RSPCA to help, who in turn called in firefighters to help free the animal.

A crew from Strood fire station were called out at about 2pm to help.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The bird had virtually given up by the time we arrived, but was still alive.

"We used our extendable ladder to reach it and one of the crew gently untangled it and brought it down.

"The RSPCA officer then told us she thought it would probably be fine after a bit of medical treatment.

"She took it away to care for it."
