People are warned to expect travel disruption as a cold snap grips Kent, causing potentially hazardous conditions on the roads.

Gritters have been out in force treating all primary routes across the county overnight after the Met Office issued a weather warning for ice, which was in place until 10am.

Drivers are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys to avoid rushing as slippery surfaces are likely on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

On the M2 coast-bound, the exit sliproad at junction 3 for Chatham and Rochester was closed for several hours due to an earlier accident, in which a vehicle caught fire.

Water used to extinguish the fire froze, making the sliproad icy and unsafe.

The road had to be closed to allow gritters to attend, before reopening just before 9am.

Meanwhile, in Wateringbury, the B2015 Maidstone Road was partially blocked following a three-vehicle crash near Wateringbury Station.

Delays are also expected on the A249 Sittingbourne Road in Detling due a broken down lorry at the M20 Junction 7.

The yellow warning of ice covers most of the south, as overnight temperatures fell below freezing.

Elsewhere, several other warnings for snow and ice are in force across the UK, with the Met Office advising vehicles could be stranded, power cuts may occur and rural areas could be cut off.
