It has been announced that the county commissioner of Kent Scouts has died.
Dean Harding unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday leaving an “indelible mark on the county, region and country”.
Kent Scouts – the second largest county in the UK – has paid tribute to its “respected colleague and personal friend”.
In a statement posted by the group online, it said: “His dedication, tenacity, and unwavering commitment to Scouting in Kent were truly remarkable.
“Dean's vibrant spirit, coupled with his passion for creating opportunities for young people, has left an indelible mark on the county, region and country.
“As we mourn the loss of a respected colleague and personal friend, let us remember Dean for the joy, fun, and inspiration he brought to our Scouting community.”
Dean had served as the county commissioner since 2016 and was honoured with a Silver Wolf award in February last year.
This is awarded for service of a most exceptional nature.
It's not normally given until at least a Silver Acorn has been previously gained and a further prolonged period of exceptional service has been achieved.
Dean had held a number of roles in scouting over the past 35 years.
From being a group skills instructor in the 1980s to an assistant section leader in the 1990s, right up to being a district commissioner and eventually county commissioner.
The Kent Scouts added: “His absence will be keenly felt, but his legacy will undoubtedly endure.
“His passion for Lower Grange Farm [an adventure centre near Maidstone] and Scouting across Kent knew no bounds.
“During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Alison, his family and his friends in Kent.
“May they find solace and strength in the many cherished memories they shared with Dean.”
