A Chatham man accused of assaulting a teenage girl asked magistrates to lift his curfew order so he could go trick or treating.

Kevan Burnett, 21, not only wanted to stay out until about 11.30pm tonight, he also wanted magistrates to consider letting him stay out on Bonfire Night, so he could go to a firework display with his family and afterwards go to a relative's home to enjoy a meal.

Burnett, of Redvers Road, is on a curfew as part of his bail conditions and must stay in his home from 6pm to 6am every day, after being charged with assault and breach of restraining order.

He was initially remanded over the matter, but was granted bail conditions at another hearing.

Burnett appeared before the bench today to ask if they would consider either suspending the curfew tonight and on Saturday, or varying the hours until later on both nights.

Martin Smith representing, said: "His sister has asked him to assist with the nieces and nephews while they go trick or treating, the youngest is just three-years-old.

"He would like to do so, as it's a fun event and he's asking for his curfew to be suspended."

Magistrates turned down the request.
