Do you remember VHS? I was prompted to remember this long forgotten vehicle of entertainment when I had a couple of handymen at my house last week.
Once they found out what I do for a living, they started talking about music and how easy it is to access it now. People still marvel at how iTunes, iPods and music systems can store 10,000 songs.
We then moved on to talk about how much entertainment has changed. We watch movies on DVDs, on demand and on the many online rental companies. Then talk went back in time – to VHS!
Do you remember the days when you would write the name of the TV show or movie you had recorded on a sticker on the spine of the video tape? If it was a programme you really wanted to keep, you might add “do not delete!” so no one would record over it.
If you wanted to guarantee that your beloved show was not ‘accidentally’ recorded over, you could crack that small square in the top corner of the VHS to lock it and if you ever changed your mind, you could stick a piece of sellotape over the top and hey presto, it was a recordable tape again.
Growing up, my parents had stacks of labelled videos. It would have taken days to sort through the odd videos, with no labels, which hadn’t been put back into their cardboard sleeve.
If you really cared about your VHS, you could keep them inside plastic boxes that looked like book cases. They came in red, green and blue. It was to make the tapes look more respectable and tidy, when in fact they were so bulky they took up twice as much room.
So what is next in this age of easy access to movies and music? Can it be an easier than downloading at the click of a button? You don’t even search for your radio station.
