Intruders at a north Kent power station managed to switch off one of four turbines, it has been revealed.

The security breach happened over a week ago at Kingsnorth Power Station, but details have only just emerged.

A police investigation has been launched with questions being asked both internally and externally.

During the four hours the turbine was off it is thought around two per cent of the UK's power was lost - but due to the way the National Grid works nobody would have been affected.

Emily Highmore, a spokesman for energy giant E.ON which runs the site, said the company was "shocked and very, very disappointed".

She added: "What these people did was very dangerous."
