A turbocharged version of Hyundai's Veloster has been announced, giving the model the power to match its striking looks.

The 184bhp Veloster Turbo SE adds a much sharper edge to the oddball sports car range, with its `1+2' door arrangement offering an unusual take on increased practicality. Until now the most powerful engine was a normally-aspirated 1.6-litre.

Hyundai claim very conservative performance figures for the range-topping new model, despite a healthy 195lb.ft of torque between 1,500rpm and 4,500rpm being transmitted to the road through a six-speed manual gearbox.

The 0-62mph sprint takes 8.4 seconds and the top speed is reported to be 133mph, but with the powerful new 1.6-litre T-GDI engine under the bonnet these figures may well be bettered in practice.

Efficiency is a paramount concern for Hyundai and the Veloster Turbo SE delivers, with CO2 emissions of 157g/km and fuel economy tested at 40.9mpg combined.

The front bumper, radiator grille and front fog lights are new to the Turbo. The rear bumper is revised to include a new fog light design, twin exhausts and a mock diffuser. A longer, wider rear spoiler with and integrated LED brake light joins a red `Turbo' badge on the bottom right of the boot lid.

The 18-inch alloy wheel designs are new, complete with chrome inserts. They are framed better on the Turbo by a deeper, moulded side skirt.

Three colour options will be available. White Crystal solid, Phantom Black pearlescent and a very special Matt Grey - a Hyundai first. The pearlescent and Matt Grey paints will cost £445 and £525 respectively.

The only other option will be a tilt and slide panoramic sunroof, available for £950.

Inside, redesigned leather seats with embossed `Turbo' logos come with electric adjustment for the driver's perch. A 7-inch touch-screen satellite navigation system, incorporating a `media centre' and a reverse parking camera, comes as standard. Buyers also receive an upgraded eight-speaker sound system including an amplifier and a subwoofer.

Prices will start at £21,995 and will include the customary five-year `Triple Care' warranty package including unlimited mileage, roadside assistance and annual car health checks.
