Two people have died in separate collisions in the Canterbury area this morning.

A 50-year-old man, believed to have lived in the city, was struck by a red Ford Ka as he walked along the A28 just outside Upstreet at around 12.20am.

He was taken to the QEQM hospital in Margate but died from his injuries.

The driver of the car, a man in his 30s from Sheppey, and his passenger, a woman in her 30s from Thanet, were not injured.

PC Guy Ditcher, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Kent Police, said: "This collision happened in a rural location with no pavement or street lighting.

"We're appealing for anyone who may have seen the man, who was wearing dark clothing, walking along the road last night to call us, so we can piece together what happened."

Meanwhile, a man was killed in a crash near Aylesham during this morning's rush hour.

Emergency services were called to a three-vehicle collision between a white Ford Transit van, a green Ford Focus and a silver Peugeot on the B2046 Adisham Road at around 7.40am.

Firefighters from Canterbury used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the driver of the Focus but he died at the scene. He is believed to have been from the Aylesham area.

The driver of the Peugeot, a man in his 20s from Chatham, was unhurt.

The driver of the Transit van, a man in his 20s from Canterbury, was also unhurt but his passenger, a woman in her 20s from Canterbury, was treated at the QEQM hospital in Margate for back pain and bruising.

Det Sgt Scott Lynch from Kent Police said: "The B2046 is a busy road, especially at that time of day, and we're appealing for anyone who saw the incident or events leading up to it to contact us."
