Two women had to be cut free from cars after a serious accident on the M2.

The Kent Air Ambulance was called to the scene on the London-bound carriageway of the motorway at Chatham.

The women are believed to be suffering neck and spinal injuries.

Fire crews from Medway, Strood and Maidstone stations went to the motorway at about 8.20am Tuesday following reports that someone was trapped in a car.

Highways Agency officers, who were first informed of the incident at 8.10am, and South East Coast Ambulance Service crews, were also at the scene.

Traffic jams built up on the motorway and surrounding roads. The Highways Agency warned drivers of delays.
