One of two alleged stranger sex attacks in Rainham is no longer being investigated as such by police.
A statement issued today said police were working with the woman involved.
But they rushed to quell rumours there had been further assaults.
Acting Superintendent Mark Arnold said: "Kent police in Medway have been made aware that there are a number of rumours circulating following two unconnected incidents which took place in Rainham last week.
'We would like to stress that these incidents are not connected and that no further incidents have taken place."
He confirmed one of the attacks was no longer being investigated as a stranger sexual assault.
He added: "We are working with the individual involved to investigate an incident involving an acquaintance."
The other attack, on Rainham Recreation ground, is still being investigated by the Major Crime team.
Checks will be taking place tomorrow in the area of the recreation ground and train station.
A meeting will also be held between 11am and 3pm at Rainham railway station on the same day, where people can ask questions or raise concerns.
The unrelated incidents happened on Monday and Tuesday last week. The first, which was not reported to police until Wednesday, happened on Monday afternoon in Cherry Tree Road.
Officers sealed off the area while forensic experts examined the scene, part of Mierscourt Road was also cordoned off and remained so until the next morning.
The second incident occurred in Rainham Recreation Ground, just off Station Road on Tuesday. A woman aged 41 told officers she was attacked in the park at about 10.30pm.
