Two children were rescued from the sea near Tankerton yesterday afternoon after they were cut off by the tide.

The coastguard and Whitstable Lifeboat were alerted to the stranded girls just after 2pm, but before they reached them a man swam out and helped them onto a passing Dutch barge.

The three were then transferred to the lifeboat, brought ashore and given safety advice.
