UK car industry continues to grow

UK CAR production rose 1.9 per cent and car exports increased by 5.6 per cent in the first half of 2004, according to data from the Office of National Statistics.

This confirms a recent growth pattern, which has seen 10 monthly rises in output during the past 12 months.

Export volumes rose for the fourth time in 2004 and the 21st time over the past two years.

Christopher Macgowan, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), said: “Car production in the UK is now truly global in terms of what we produce and the markets for which cars are distributed.

“We are unique in hosting more producers here than in any other European country and this is reflected in a diverse and exciting product line up.

“However, where the UK really stands out is in the increase in production for export markets. Six months into 2004, this stands at record levels, a trend SMMT fully expects to continue in the months and years to come.”
