HUNDREDS of pounds worth of alcohol has been seized by police as part of a crackdown on underage drinking in a part of the Medway Towns.

The action, which forms part of the Safer Autumn campaign, is aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour and nuisance crime.

Since the beginning of the month officers have been taking part in patrols of hotspot areas on the trail of underage drinkers. The 26 neighbourhood officers have been seizing cider, beer, spirits and wine from the under-18s across the Gillingham and Rainham and Gillingham area.

They have been patrolling on foot, by bicycle and in cars throughout the initiative which is set to continue until November.

So far 10 youngsters have been taken home and warned of the dangers of alcohol in front of an adult. The officers have also sent letters to the parents or guardians of those who have had alcohol seized from them.

Officers are not only concerned about the anti-social behaviour linked to alcohol consumption but also for the dangerous position the youngsters are putting themselves in.

Sgt Stacy Robson, who is coordinating the initiative, said: "Some of the people my officers have stopped have been so intoxicated that we have had to take them home to prevent harm coming to them.

"In some instances I was concerned to see that the teenagers had actually obtained the alcohol from their parents. I cannot understand why a parent would put their child in a situation where they could be vulnerable and subjected to a crime.

"I would urge them to consider the potential danger they are putting their son or daughter in when they supply them with alcohol.

"Our message is simple. If you are underage and drinking on the streets, be prepared to have your parents informed and alcohol seized.

"This action demonstrates that we will use all the powers available to us to keep people safe, reduce antisocial behaviour and enhance the quality of life for local people."

The Safer Autumn campaign utilises the powers held by Police Community Support Officers who can seize alcohol from underage drinkers.
