Video: Statement by Chief
Superintendent Neil Jerome
A one-month old baby boy who suffered
multiple injuries in a suspected assault remains in a critical
condition.
Kent Police north divisional commander
chief superintendent, Neil Jerome, said that the boy is still being
treated in hospital.
He said: "He is in a critical but
stable condition. The community's response has been one of concern
for the welfare and swift recovery of the baby boy.
"A thorough investigation is
underway."
He added that Kent Police was working
"extremely closely" with the medical professionals treating the boy
to establish the exact nature and cause of the boy's injuries.

vigil held tonight in Gravesend
The boy was reportedly found with
multiple injuries, including internal wounds. He is also said to
have suffered a cardiac arrest.
Ch Supt Jerome said a vigil which took
place in Gravesend last night was attended by about 80 people and
was "peaceful and reflective." Its focus was the welfare and
recovery of the baby.
He added: "I would urge the community
to continue to support one another and to focus on the recovery of
the baby boy."
But he also said that speculation on
Twitter and social networking sites had been unhelpful: "There has
been a lot of unhelpful speculation around social media about what
has happened and what has been going on in the local community.
"It is our job to establish the facts.
When our investigation reaches a further stage we will add further
details," he said.
Answering concerns over the release on
bail of a 35-year-old man and 33-year-old woman, both from
Gravesend, Ch Supt Jerome said: "It is a very serious investigation
and we are conducting it thoroughly. Releasing people on bail is
not uncommon in this type of investigation."
He said that a mobile police station
had been set up, and the police were working with the local
community and churches to encourage calm.
The one-month-old baby was taken to
Darent Valley Hospital , Dartford, on Thursday morning and later
transferred to King's College Hospital, London.
