Swimmers brave cold water
on Boxing Day

Dozens of people braved the cold conditions on
Saturday to take part in the annual Boxing Day dip in Dover Harbour
Board.

Organised by Dover Lifeguard Club, the event
gave some hardy souls the chance to spend a few minutes in the
freezing water, and, for many of them, raise some money the
charity.

They lined up on the beach in a range of
costumes, from Smurfs to Fairies. One group, from The Bull public
house in Dover, were raising money for the Demelza House children’s
hospice and the cardiac unit at the WIlliam Harvey Hospital in
Ashford.

Former Dover councillor Vic Matcham is among
those who take part each year, this year dressed as a glamorous
woman, complete with colourful wig.

Most stayed in the water for only a few
seconds, under the watchful eye of the Lifeguards, but others
stayed for a few minutes - with one group enjoying an impromptu
game of water polo.

Then it was back out to a hot drink, and time
to return home to enjoy the rest of Boxing Day, even if one person
left a shoe behind.
