Video footage of police searching MP's office

Sorry, this video asset has been removed.

The Conservative Party has released this video footage of the police searching MP Damian Green's office at the House of Commons.

Mr Green - the MP for Ashford and the Conservatives' shadow immigration minister - was arrested last Thursday over Home Office leaks.

His homes in Kent and London were searched, as well as his office (as the clip shows).

Meanwhile, in a fresh twist to the row over his arrest, Mr Green is reported to have asked for his home and office to be swept for bugs.

It follows the MP's suspicions that his home computer may have been tampered with as it has failed to work properly since its return after the raid on his London home.

He is also understood to be concerned that his emails may have been monitored for some time.

In a separate development, the Metropolitan Police has announced a review of its operation amid continuing criticism of the way it was handled.

Acting Metropolitan police commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson has asked British Transport police chief constable Ian Johnston to report to him within seven days to review the handling of the police inquiry into Home Office leaks.

In a statement, Sir Paul said: "I am properly concerned about the issues being raised within the continuing debate surrounding the ongoing investigation into the leaking of Government information."

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith welcomed Johnston’s appointment and confirmed she sought assurances the police inquiry was being carried out in a "proportionate" manner.

The official at the centre of the Home Office inquiry has defended his actions. Through his solicitor, Christopher Galley said he had leaked information because it was in the public interest.

A statement read out at a press conference on behalf of Mr Galley by his solicitor Neil O’May on Monday confirmed the pair had met over a two-year period between 2006 and 2008 and that Mr Galley had passed the shadow immigration minister information.

"If ever there was a case of don’t shoot the messenger, this is it," his solicitor said.
