Defeated Labour candidates sought some consolation in the fact that their defeats were not necessarily personal but now face the task of trying to rebuild their support from a desperately low base.

Back in 1997, Blair heralded a new dawn breaking over the country. After 13 years, it seems the sun has finally set on the New Labour dream - at least in Kent.

The irony is that while the results were so decisive here, the national picture remains so uncertain. Kent voters have had their say but who will end up with the keys to Downing Street has still to be determined.
