A lollipop camera is going into service to catch drivers who ignore a crossing guard.

Road signs are being erected near the village primary school in Dymchurch, which is near to the main A259, to warn of the camera’s presence and hopefully deter would-be car louts.

Lollipop lady Madeleine Anderson has suffered abuse from irate drivers even as she guides children to safety across the busy road and has also watched in horror as drivers have swerved round her.

She said: “People fail to stop up to three time a week. They either pay no attention when I’m walking out with the stickor slalom around me once I’m in the middle of the road. I also get abuse; we have to get adults across the road as well for safety reasons and we get abuse that we’re stopping the traffic.

“We’ve petitioned for this camera for a long time.”

The camera, the first of its kind in east Kent, was paid for by the Community Safety Unit at Shepway council after it became aware of the problems in Dymchurch. The crossing site is not marked and is on a series of S- bends, meaning it is difficult to see approaching cars, particularly in the morning when the road is very busy.

The hi-tech lollicam has a tilt-switch inside that turns it on automatically when the lollipop is brought upright.
