Video: Simone and George
Whelan talk about their miracle baby
By Hayley Robinson
Simone and George Whelan had just days to prepare
themselves for the arrival of their first baby after their
first scan revealed the due date was just four days away.
Despite the initial shock the couple, who live in Fielder Close,
Murston, remained calm as they had been trying for a baby for the
last six years.
Simone suffers from Polycystic
Ovary Syndrome which reduces fertility, and before joining Slimming
World in August 2007 she had weighed 20 stone.
It meant the couple's chances of
conceiving naturally were slim but when Simone lost four stone in
weight the NHS agreed to fund IVF treatment which began in July
this year. However, she was already expecting and on August 31, 13
days after his due date, Ryan was born at Medway Maritime Hospital
weighing 7lb 8.5ozs
Simone, 31, who has lost a total of
seven and a half stone, said: "They gave me a drug to start my
cycle as my periods were irregular but it didn’t work so I did a
digital pregnancy test. It was Monday, August 10 - I had the day
off and George was at work. It said I was five to six weeks plus
pregnant but I didn't believe it so I did another one and that was
positive too.
"But it was a scan at Medway
Maritime Hospital on the Friday which revealed I was 39 weeks and
five days pregnant and due on the Tuesday!
"I’d had no food cravings, no
sickness. I had felt some movement but I thought I was imagining it
because it was something I wanted so much.
"We were both shocked but while
everyone else was losing their heads we remained calm - we’d waited
six years for this to happen. Ryan really is a miracle baby."
