Local music store
thriving despite recession

Independent record stores are benefiting from the demise of
big-name competitors on the high street.

Music store manager Manny Esguerra-Rossiter, who runs Sound
& Image in Chatham, says that his store has outlived all its
local competitors.

"We had a Zavvi that closed down in December 2008; we had a
Woolworths; there have been several independents in Gillingham that
have gone. Now our nearest big competitor for new CDs is HMV in
Maidstone."

Figures released today also show that HMV’s music shops are
enjoying record trading. Like for like sales in the UK and Ireland
are up 2.2%, with total sales growth in the UK of 14.6%.
