Thirty six pubs are closing each week, according to figures from the British Beer and Pub Association.
That's a third up from 27 closures a week during 2007.
Rob Hayward, chief executive of the BBPA, blames the closures on declining consumer confidence and soaring inflation.
Mr Hayward said: "Not only are the costs of running a pub increasing, but fewer people through the door means less cash in the tills."
