A residents' meeting to protest against a proposed development is still going ahead despite the weather.

Country Style Recycling wants to build a recycling and anaerobic digestion plant near the village of Sellindge on the Otterpool Quarry site along Ashford Road.

Protect Kent is against the plans - believing the anaerobic digestion plant will release unpleasant smells, the large buildings will ruin the countryside and increased lorry traffic will cause property values to fall.

The charity says it is not against the development specifically, as it would have environmental benefits, but the location would be wrong.

Sean Furey, the deputy director of Protect Kent said: "The problem is that the site they have chosen is right on the edge of a village right by homes and small businesses."

It is another blow to the East Kent village, which is already fighting another large scale proposed development - a lorry park.

Mr Furey said he thought the village was attractive to development: "I think it is the proximity to the M20.

"I think that the motorway junctions like junction 11 are magnets to all sorts of companies who want to make money."

A Kent County Council meeting tonight where the plans were to be discussed has been cancelled due to the weather. A revised date for the meeting has not yet been confirmed.

However, a meeting by the residents' association is still going ahead.
