VILLAGERS at Bramling, near Canterbury, have got together to organise a fete in aid of the Pilgrims Hospice. It is the first event of its kind in the village since 1959.

It is being held on Sunday, September 7, in the gardens of Jo Tatman's house, Apple Tree Cottage, which is next to the Haywain pub.

The fete takes place between 1.30pm-4.30pm The owner of the field next to Mrs Tatman's house is opening it for parking and pony and tractor rides.

There will be a farmyard corner with competitions to guess the name of the pet chicken and the weight of a pet turkey, along with demonstrations by a potter and a copper sculptor.

A man from Wingham Well will create a willow sculpture of a heron by Mrs Tatman's pond, there will be a penalty football competition in the field, an exhibition of classic cars and tractors, a massive tombola and a barbecue. A jazz band will play all afternoon.

Mrs Tatman said: "If the fete is successful we hope to hold it again next year. It has all just snowballed from my idea and everyone has been a great help. One neighbour even cancelled her holiday and lost her deposit so she could come to the fete because she said she didn't want to miss the first event held in Bramling for 40 years."
