THE situation is improving at Medway Maritime Hospital following the outbreak of a sickness and diarrhoea bug.

The Noro Virus led to four ward closures - Wakely, Byron, Will Adams and Tennyson - at the hospital in Gillingham. Patients were moved to other wards while the problem was dealt with.

Tennyson ward was able to reopen at the weekend and Will Adams reopened on Monday. Hospital staff are due to review the situation on Byron ward later this week. Wakely remains closed for the time being.

Hospital chiefs have been reminding visitors to strictly adhere to infection control methods and not to visit wards if they had experienced the bug themselves in the last three days.

Letters have also been sent to all GPs in Medway asking them to advise their patients not to visit the hospital if they had symptoms of the virus.

A hospital spokesman said: "Visitors who are ill, particularly if they have been suffering from symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting, are asked to stay away for the protection of our patients, until they are fully recovered."
