Dangerous use of laser beam pens has prompted police in part of Kent to warn shopkeepers to stop selling them - or at least be careful who they sell them to.

Police are also suggesting that parents take the pens away from children.

The clampdown in Thanet follows reports the bright beams have been shone in the faces of motorists, even bus drivers and could cause accidents.

The gadgets are available in gift shops and newsagents and sell for around £1.

Officers have been visiting shops to explain what can happen when they are misused.

Neighbourhood sergeant for Ramsgate and Broadstairs Sue Groombridge said: "The laser pens have the ability to cause temporary blindness.

"Young people may think they are a harmless toy - but there is the potential for an assault charge."

Police are focusing on antisocial behavious as part of a Safer Winter campaign.
