Foreign lorry drivers are being accused of turning lay-bys in Kent into a health hazard.

Now there are calls for a proper facility to be built in the county to stop them parking up then leaving a load of mess behind when they leave.

Plans were announced recently by the Government to look at charging lorry drivers from abroad to use our roads.

KCC says it wants some of that cash to build a lorry park.

Dover and Deal MP Charlie Elphicke said: "The problem is you can't have the lay-bys used for legitimate purposes - your car breaks down, you feel sick, your kid feels sick, those are the times you need to use a lay-by.

"If you can't do that you're then forced to park in a very busy road and cause a massive traffic hazard - that's why we have lay-bys and we don't want foreign truckers to be parking in them."

He said it wasn't just the hazard of clogging up the lay-by - often "a whole load of rubbish" was then dumped.

He added: "You can see boxes of rubbish, empty drink cans, toilet paper and stuff that goes with toilet paper - it's a real health hazard.

"It's disgusting to have a lay-by in this condition and is also disgusting for anyone who lives near a lay-by and many people do."
