A health warning has been issued for Kent - with the elderly and very young most at risk from soaring temperatures.

It comes as some are predicting the thermometer will nudge towards 30C at the weekend.

Kent County Council warned vulnerable people such as the young and elderly to stay in the shade and keep cool where they can.

People who work outside are also being told to be care when the sun is out as part of a campaign led by NHS called "Cover Up, Mate".

It's aimed at encouraging workmen and sports players to wear protection against the sun.

Director for Public Health at the council Andrew Scott-Clark said: "We’re not wanting to spoil anyone’s fun in the sun but sadly figures do show a huge increase in A&E attendances during spells of hot weather.

"We know most people do take sensible precautions so we just want to remind them to help out those vulnerable friends, family and neighbours – those who may be less able to look after themselves – and make sure they have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medications they need."

To stay safe in the weather that's predicted people are being given these handy tips:

• Make sure you have enough water, food and medication
• Regularly drink cold drinks
• Never leave the elderly or infants in parked in the sun
• Have cool baths or showers to cool down

However, Met Office pundits are predicting slightly cooler temperatures, with the mercury set to hit 27C on Sunday.
