The Met Office issued a warning as Kent was lashed by strong winds and heavy rain.

Forecasters said gusts could reach speeds of between 50 and 60mph across the county throughout the afternoon.

The yellow weather warning for wind was in place until 3pm.

A spokesman said: "A narrow band of heavy rain will be accompanied by squally winds as it moves east across southern and southeastern parts of England over the next few hours.

"Gusts of 50-60 mph are possible in places.

"The public are advised to take extra care due to the localised squally winds and heavy rain.

"An active cold front will move quickly east across England today, bringing a short spell of heavy rain and squally winds to more southern and southeastern parts of England."

The Met Office also warned of possible damage to trees caused by heavy winds.

A fallen tree on the railway between Strood and Tonbridge forced Southeastern to close the line for almost two hours, causing delays for passengers.
