Arsonists have destroyed one of Kent’s most popular water ski clubs.

The remains of the Foreness Water Ski headquarters on the promenade at Palm Bay in Cliftonville are being demolished for safety reasons after fire wrecked the single storey building late on Wednesday night.

Police say the clubhouse was broken into through a back wall, a quantity of alcohol was removed and some was left on the ground outside, before the fire was started inside.

Investigations into the cause continue today, but a police spokesman confirmed: "We believe this fire was started deliberately."

Around 15 firefighters and three pumps from Margate and Thanet fire stations were at the scene from 10.30pm; crews wore breathing apparatus as they tackled the flames. At the height of the fire smoke could be seen billowing above the 30ft cliffs and was visible for miles around the coastline.

The fire is a bitter blow for club members who rebuilt and refurbished the former derelict seaside cafe in 2004 to create a clubhouse that included social room, kitchen, bar, showers, changing rooms and toilets.

Ward councillor Sandy Ezekiel, who supported the refurbishment programme, said: "I am sickened that vandals could destroy something that is part of our seaside recreation. I will do all I can to help the club get back on its feet."
