We must stop defensive mistakes, says Welling United manager Jamie Day

Welling manager Jamie Day has urged his team to cut out their defensive errors if they are to reach the Blue Square South play-offs.

The Wings missed the chance to make up ground on high-flying Thurrock on Saturday after letting a 2-1 lead slip at Park View Road.

And Day knows that they need to be on their game if they are to put together a late run in the second half of the season.

"It's disappointing that two mistakes have cost us the three points," said Day (pictured).

"If we want to try and achieve anything this year then in these type of games we can't afford to make any mistakes, and if we do that is what happens.

"They deserved to take the lead but the goal just before half-time helped us. We probably outplayed them in the second half and in the end are disappointed not to get three points, although a draw was probably the fair result.

"They had a game the previous Saturday and it showed in the first half that we weren't quite up to the pace of the game."

Day is also ready to listen to offers for some members of his first-team squad as he looks to shuffle his pack.

The Wings boss wants to look at potential players for next season and knows that he needs to get people out on loan first to keep within his budget.

"The budget is tight and before we get anyone in then we'd need to get someone out," said Day.

"It might be a case of getting someone else out on loan and then we can bring someone in on loan as well.

"There are certain players that we want to keep for our first team and others that we need to look at and see if they are good enough. At the same time if there are people available from a higher level then there are players that are available to go out on loan."
