Weather can't dampen Olympic spirit on Handover Day

The Olympic handover from Beijing to London was celebrated across Kent on Sunday.

Hundreds put their gaze firmly on the London Games in 2012 thanks to a giant TV screen in Herne Bay - one of only 16 across the country.

Meanwhile, in Dover, there was a huge street party to mark the occasion.

Gwyn Prosser, MP for Dover and Deal, used the day to make a rallying call for the Olympic torch to come through the town in four years' time - just like it did when the Games last came to London in 1948.

He said: "We are lobbying the Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell and other ministers. We are writing directly to the Olympics committee.

"This is not just a Dover effort but has been acknowledged by Kent County Council who are heading up this campaign."

In Herne Bay's Memorial Park, young and old braved the damp conditions to watch London Mayor Boris Johnson take the Olympic flag in Beijing on the giant screen.

Singer Leona Lewis and musician Jimmy Page performed a version of Led Zepellin's Whole Lot of Love during an eight-minute showpiece dedicated to London's Games.

But the biggest cheer in the park was reserved for David Beckham - who kicked a football from his platform into the crowd at the Bird's Nest.

Charles Arnold, 87, said: "I was in London in 1948 and cannot wait for it to come back in 2012. I have really enjoyed the athletics."

Elsewhere in the county, Ramsgate tied in Handover Day with the opening of the new athletics track at the Marlowe Academy - the only international standard track in the area and a possible pre-Games training camp for visiting teams.

Medway's celebrations saw the flag taken to the top of Rochester Castle and hoisted at 2.33pm (14.33 marked 1,433 days until the start of the 2012 Olympics).

There were demonstrations from local sports clubs, along with ‘come and try’ sessions, in Maidstone on Sunday.

Tunbridge Wells will hold its celebrations on August 29 in conjunction with the annual Summer Slam sports activity programme for children.

There were also free swimming sessions for people of all ages at pools in Canterbury, Sevenoaks, Gravesham, Thanet, Ashford, Dartford, Dover and Tunbridge Wells.
