A Kent man who has a 62-year-old
television has proved any set can be converted to
digital.

With just three months to go until the
start of the digital switchover across the South East, Brian
Maley, has managed to convert his 1950s Bush TV.

The 72-year-old, of Kemp Road, in
Whitstable, bought the historic black and white telly 25 years
ago as a collector’s item.

The wooden boxed set was originally
marketed for families to allow them to watch the coronation of
Queen Elizabeth II.

Mr Maley said: "Considering I
thought it would never work again apart from being a novelty item,
transferring the signals to digital was absolutely amazing... you
wouldn't have thought 50 years ago the technology would be
available now for this television to work.

"It was very easy to do - anybody
who's got a TV that is quite elderly and they want to cherish can
be converted into digital."

Mr Maley now hopes to watch the
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on his vintage telly, but - despite a
digital box saving his TV - the picture remains in black and
white.

Tony Gray, assistant regional manager
for Meridian Digital UK, helped Brian with the switchover.

He said: "When we started out we
weren’t sure if it would work, but it has.

"It goes to show people don’t have to
throw out their old TVs. It’s a shame to see them in tips because
they think they need a brand new one for digital switchover."
