Goal-shy Welling failed to score for a third successive game as they lost to new leaders Newport in Blue Square South on Saturday.

The Wings, who are in desperate need of new firepower, started brightly but quickly faded once Newport took a 20th-minute lead.

Welling handed former Gillingham midfielder Danny Spiller (pictured) his debut and also welcomed back Lee Blackburn, who came on as a second-half substitute, after releasing the ineffective Craig Rocastle.

The home side could have been ahead as early as the second minute but Loui Fazackerley's far-post shot was blocked.

Tony Finn's bright run set up Spiller, who was denied by keeper Glyn Thompson, as Welling continued to press.

Their failure to convert one of the chances proved costly when Newport scored in the 20th minute, Craig Reid bundling in Sam Foley's cross even though keeper Charlie Mitten claimed to have taken the cross with both hands.

Welling, one deflected Spiller shot aside, rarely threatened the visitors, who doubled their lead in the 67th minute through Reid's spot-kick after a foul by Steve Perkins. There was no dispute about that decision, although the Welling management were furious that prior to the decision, play was allowed to be restarted by referee Gavin Muge, even though he was busy lecturing Andy Sambrook following a foul.

The Wings travel to Maidenhead on Tuesday night as they start a run of three games against sides below them in the table.

Two goals from Ryan Dolby and Warren McBean led Bromley to a comprehensive 5-1 win at cash-strapped Weymouth.

The hosts, who welcomed back former boss Steve Claridge out of reirement, took the lead through David Obaze's first-minute header.

Bromley equalised through Dolby and then took the lead just before half-time when Gareth A Williams headed in.

Dolby made it 3-1 on 53 mintues and McBean claimed the fourth two minutes later.

McBean then beat the offside trap to add the fifth on the hour mark and it could have been more late on as Bromley piled on the pressure.

The Lillywhites host Braintree on Tuesday night at Hayes Lane.
