Luis Cumbers' second-half goal ensured Welling got back to winning ways on Saturday.
The Wings saw off Kent rivals Tonbridge Angels in the FA Trophy third qualifying round in a game of little quality at Park View Road.
Welling probably did enough to go through but neither side were at their best.
Loui Fazackerley impressed most for the Wings, having a deflected shot wide, setting up Loick Pires, who headed over, and then volleying over in the first 22 minutes.
Cumbers nearly set up Pires for a simple tap-in just before the half-hour but his cross was too hard for the forward.
Welling, who had 10 first-half corners, were indebted to keeper Gareth Stewart for tipping over Rory Hill's deflected shot five minutes before half-time.
Jack Parkinson prodded the ball wide early in the second half before Cumbers latched on to a long ball in the 59th minute and scuffed his shot beyond keeper Lee Worgan.
Tonbridge introduced Claude Seanla and Jake Beechcroft late on but it was not until the 88th minute that they came close to equalising when Jamie Coyle was on hand to deny Seanla.
Pires has already scored a couple of goal of the season contenders but he added a miss of the season to his collection in the final minute when he somehow poked the ball wide after Cumbers had made a chance out of nothing.
The Wings bank £4,000 in prize money and go into the hat for Monday's draw.
