Three second-half goals earned Gillingham a comfortable pre-season friendly win at Welling on Tuesday night.
The hosts provided Gills with a stiff workout for an hour but a host of half-time changes and an improved second-half effort proved sufficient.
Apart from second-string keepers, with Paolo Gazzinaga again getting a run out for the Gills, it was largely first-choice line-ups although Andy Hessenthaler left strike duo Danny Kedwell and Adam Birchall on the bench.
Dennis Oli played up front alone in the first half although he received good support from Chris Whelpdale and Luke Rooney who both had shots from long-range.
Matt Fish boosted his claims at right-back with a telling block to divert ex-Gills forward Luis Cumbers' goalbound shot wide in the 26th mintue. Then seven minutes before the break the former Dover defender was back to make a last-ditch tackle to deny another former Gills striker, this time Andy Pugh was the man denied.
Gillingham nearly took the lead on the stroke of half-time but having given the ball away, Jack Obersteller got back to tackle Rooney who then saw his follow-up attempt cleared off the line by Day.
Gills made seven half-time changes and within four minutes Jack Payne had set up Adam Birchall to score his first goal since signing from Dover - a neat, low finish beyond substitute keeper Jack Bradshaw.
Kedwell, who scored 49 goals in two seasons for Welling, then nearly picked out Birchall at the near post as the strike pair gave a sign of hopefully good things to come.
Lee Clarke fluffed a simple header at the other end before Gillingham's night turned sour when Birchall was stretchered off with a knee injury.
Barry Fuller saw his right-wing cross turned into his own net by Ben Martin with 12 minutes left to make it 2-0 and the Gills added a third in stoppage time when Danny Jackman, who played the entire 90 minutes, crossed on the break to give Kedwell a simple tap-in for his second pre-season goal.
