Welling United found Blue Square Bet South leaders Braintree Town too strong as they slipped to defeat at Park View Road on Saturday.
The game remained goalless for much of the first half before Braintree hit the home side with two goals in the lead up to half-time.
Glenn Poole was on target to give the Essex side the lead against the run of play after 39 minutes before Jamie Guy added the second a minute before the break.
Wings player-manager Jamie Day (pictured)brought his side back into the game with a free-kick after 54 minutes.
But Poole grabbed his second 20 minutes later to ensure the visitors stay well clear at the top of the table.
