Welling's 10-game winning run came to an end against higher-league Grimsby in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

The Wings were far from disgraced against the Blue Square Bet Premier high-flyers and certainly did enough to deserve a replay. However, it was Grimsby who took the spoils and booked their place in the last eight.

An open game, played in a terrific atmosphere, saw chances at both ends as well as three penalties and 10 bookings - even though there was never a nasty tackle in sight.

Welling hit the post as early as the sixth minute when Jack Obersteller's free-kick evaded everyone in the penalty area but bounced to safety via the inside of the upright.

Anthony Acheampong blocked Ross Hannah's ninth-minute drive but then gave away a needless penalty when he handled a right-wing corner under pressure at the far post. However, his blushes were spared when Hannah's spot-kick came back off the inside of the post.

Fraser Franks shot over for Welling but it was at the other end where the chances flowed as the hosts continued to give the ball away cheaply. However, Welling attacked at every opportunity and were rewarded with a penalty of their own on 25 minutes.

Ross Lafayette, who gave Shaun Pearson a torrid afternoon, got behind his marker from a throw-in and was promptly hauled down. Joe Healy (pictured) converted the spot-kick for his 13th goal of the season to put Welling ahead.

The lead lasted only four minutes as Loui Fazakerley dived in on Jamie Devitt to give away a third penalty in the opening half-hour and he picked himself up to tuck away the spot-kick.

The cards continued to flow before half-time, the most ridiculous being Kurtis Guthrie who in attempting a shot at goal, managed to catch the clearing Bradley Wood and was cautioned.

Welling created five chances in the first 10 minutes of the second half but emerged from that spell trailing 2-1. Scott Kinch hit the top of the bar from distance, Lee Clarke was twice denied by keeper James McKeown, Acheampong headed over and Kinch's cross-shot was cleared by the legs of McKeown.

The game was decided on 52 minutes when Welling never cleared a corner and the ball finally fell to Marcus Marshall, whose low drive found the back of the net from 20 yards.

Welling continued to apply pressure but the closest they came to an equaliser was when player/boss Jamie Day fired over after fantastic work down the left by the willing Lafayette.
