A stunning second half goal from Andy Pugh got Welling back to winning ways in Blue Square South on Monday.
Pugh, pictured, took his season tally to three in six games with a curling 25-yard effort after excellent work by substitute Joe Healy.
It put the Wings 2-0 up and only a generous penalty award for Lewes in stoppage time - combined with some sloppy finishing at the other end - meant the final scoreline was closer than the game actually was.
Welling got off to the best possible start when Graeme Andrews turned Jack Oberstellar's excellent fifth-minute free-kick past keeper Chris Winterton.
Luis Cumbers and Pugh both went close before Welling had a penalty appeal turned down. Neat interchange between Cumbers and Pugh worked an opening for Tommy Whitnell but referee Nigel Lugg waved play on when Anthony Barness appeared to bring Whitnell down.
Lewes should have been level on the stroke of half-time. Indecision by keeper Charlie Mitten let in Tom Murphy but Oberstellar got back to clear his effort off the line via the crossbar. However, Wings defender Andy Sambrook when trying to clear headed the ball back towards goal only for Oberstellar to clear off the line again with Lewes this time appealing for a penalty after it looked as though he used his hand.
Welling continued to dominate after the break but it wasn't until Healy came on for Ben Billings that they doubled their lead. Healy made good ground from inside his own half and fed Pugh, who did the rest with a terrific shot.
Pugh then shot wide with his left foot, Andrews was denied his second by a stunning one-handed save and Healy and Cumbers both wasted good openings.
Lewes pulled one back three minutes into stoppage time when Simon Wormull scored from the spot after substitute Femi Omegbehin felled Tom Murphy, who went down rather easily in the area.
Bromley continue to set the early pace in the Blue Square Bet South following a sixth win from six games on Monday.
The division’s leaders won their game at Bishop’s Stortford 1-0 thanks to a second half penalty from Harrison Dunk.
Bromley’s winner came with 77 minutes gone after Nic McDonnell was brought down in the area by the Stortford keeper.
