A goalkeeping error handed Welling an injury-time Blue Square Bet South win over leaders Chelmsford on Tuesday.

Former Wings loanee James Pullen dropped an attempted clearance by City substitute Mark Haines to hand Luis Cumbers (pictured) his second goal of the evening in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

It was no more than the Wings deserved as they twice came from behind against a Chelmsford team who were the strongest outfit they had faced to date this season.

Cumbers could have scored twice in the first five minutes but Pullen made one terrific save and then comfortably held a low drive as the hosts started brightly.

Ricky Modeste headed wide for the visitors but they took the lead on 20 minutes when Modeste cut past Jamie Day too easily and his cross-shot was headed in by the lively Sam Higgins.

Welling never got their passing game going in the first half but they got their act together after the break. The scores were level on 53 minutes when Day's excellent tackle in midfield set up Loui Fazackerley and his precise through ball was met perfectly by Cumbers to score his first Welling goal.

But parity lasted just eight minutes as Jamie Coyle was penalised for handball when blocking ex-Wing Marlon Patterson's cross and Dave Rainford blasted home the spot-kick. It was one of a number of decisions that the hosts felt went against them with Day collecting a booking for his protests.

However, Welling's character was on display again within two minutes. Pugh's shot from the edge of the box was deflected wide but from Jack Oberstellar's resulting corner, Pugh nodded in at the near post to make it 2-2.

Both teams had chances as the game went from end to end, Fazackerley and City's Robert Edmans both being denied.

Cumbers nearly won the game when his near-post shot was turned behind and then he fired wide in the 90th minute. But it was third time lucky with virtually the last kick of the game as substitute Jordan Johnson crossed into the box, Haines made a mess of the clearance and Pullen was left red-faced after dropping the ball at the feet of Cumbers.

Welling now travel to Bromley, who took over top spot with a 1-0 win over Havant & Waterlooville, on Saturday.

Bromley’s good start to the season continued at Hayes Lane as they recorded the side’s fourth win from their opening four fixtures.

Warren McBean’s second half header separated the sides as he met Paul Vines’ deep cross at the back post on the hour mark.
