Welling United captain Jack Parkinson will go on trial with League 2 Southend United on Monday.

The Wings defender, who joined the club as a teenager from VCD in July 2008, is expected to play in two pre-season friendlies for Southend before they decide whether to make Welling a bid for his services.

Parkinson, pictured, who can also play in midfield, signed a new one-year deal with Welling at the end of last season.

Welling boss Jamie Day said: "They want to have a look at him first before finalising anything.

"If we can progress players on then it shows we're doing a half-decent job. Obviously it weakens our squad but it gives others the chance to shine and it frees up some money to bring players in that we wanted to previously but were unable to afford."

Parkinson is expected to feature for Southend in their pre-season friendly at Dartford on Monday night.

He becomes the second Welling player to land a trial with a Football League club this week after Gillingham looked at Jack Obersteller.
