Caretaker boss Lee Protheroe wants to remain at Welling in any capacity once a new manager is appointed.
Protheroe (pictured) will not be applying to take over from former boss Andy Ford but says he wants to stay at Park View Road.
"I've never said I don't want the job," said Protheroe. "I just think at this stage of my career, it's too big for me.
"I could have won four games 5-0 and I don't think I'd get the job but I understand that. I'm just going to enjoy my time as caretaker manager.
"I haven't applied. I'm getting asked it every single day.
"The board have not asked me to apply and if I am honest then maybe the job is a little bit too early in my career.
"if someone came in and wanted me as their number two then I'd love to stay at this club as an assistant, or even a player."
Protheroe believes that whoever takes over will inherit a squad more than capable of competing in Blue Square South.
The Wings are hovering just above the relegation zone but Protheroe believes they will soon climb up the table.
"I'm sure whoever they appoint will be the correct person and he'll have a great nucleus to work with," added Protheroe.
"Whoever was watching at Chelmsford, and I'm sure there were plenty there in the stands, would have seen that the boys never gave up for 90 minutes.
"We are in a false position in the league, there are a lot worse teams out there.
"I know a few of the applicants but it's each to their own. If I can help the board in any way and give them advice on individuals then I will but I think it's there for anyone at the moment."
Meanwhile, Welling have denied that Sittingbourne boss Gary Abbott has already been lined up for an interview and have also disclosed that, contrary to reports, former Bishop's Stortford manager Martin Hayes has not applied for the job.
The Wings are still accepting applications, with more than 35 already received, and are expected to draw up a shortlist by the end of this week.
