Welling boss Jamie Day has been handed a major boost on his first day in the job after keeper Charlie Mitten rejected a move to Blue Square South rivals Braintree.
Mitten, pictured, was the subject of a seven-day approach from the Essex outfit but he decided to stay at Park View Road at the weekend.
"I told Braintree that I'm staying at Welling," said Mitten. "It's my local club, I'm enjoying it here and this is the start of a good run for us.
"I'm happy here, I'm trying to stay injury-free and that's doing me the world of good.
"It was very tempting, everyone I spoke to said that the Braintree manager is very ambitious. They offered me a great deal to the end of the season but I sat down with my family and Welling is my local club, I enjoy it here.
"I want to stay and do my best for the club. I love playing for Welling, we've got some good players here and hopefully the last two games have given us a bit of spirit."
Day was delighted that Mitten, who is playing some of the best football of his career, is staying at Welling.
The new manager said: "I played with Charlie when I first went to Welling so I know him well and people have told me how well he has played this season.
"I'm glad that he is staying as he is a decent keeper. He pulled off a couple of decent saves at Worcester and he will be my first-choice keeper."
