Blue Square Bet South promotion chasers Welling slipped to a third successive away defeat, on Saturday.
A 2-0 loss at Weston-super-Mare saw Welling drop from top spot two second as the Jamie Day's (pictured) side failed to score for the first time this season.
Weston’s Ross Steam fired a penalty wide in the first half and at the other end only a great save denied Lee Clarke from scoring for Welling.
But the hosts took a lead into the break after Jamie Laird scored from a scramble.
Home goalkeeper Irish Lloyd made another good save, this time to deny player-manager Day, from a free-kick.
The Wings were handed a boost when goalscorer Laird was sent-off for a second bookable offence but in the dying minutes, while the Wings piled forward in search of an equaliser, they were stunned by a second Weston goal scored by Dayle Grubb.
Welling were grateful for slip-ups elsewhere at the top of the table and sit one point off the top with two games in hand.
