WHEN Trevor the turkey was bought two months ago by Dave Keeling the bird looked destined to be served up on his owner's plate on Christmas Day.

But Mr Keeling's plan to have his bird and and eat it hit a snag when he discussed it with friends in the British Queen pub at Minster, Sheppey.

In a bid to spare Trevor's life, the pub regulars began a campaign. Posters were placed around Minster Village with the message: "Free Trevor, A Turkey's For Life Not Just For Christmas." The bird's supporters even started a petition.

Such was the public support to save the bird that Mr Keeling has decided to give in and let Trevor spend the rest of his natural life on a friend's land surrounded by chickens.

Mr Keeling said: "Trevor has had a happy life so far and I was hoping he would make my life happy at Christmas because I reckon he's about 15lbs. But I've decided to spare him due to the campaign. Besides I've kind of grown to like him."
