Welling 2-0 Bognor
WELLING re-ignited their play-off challenge in Conference South with a creditable home win over Bognor on Tuesday night.
The Wings got off to the perfect start when Matt Bodkin collected Leon Solomon's short throw-in after six minutes and cut inside before sending a right-foot shot past Bognor 'keeper Craig Stoner.
Welling continued to press and Danny Kedwell headed wide before the Wings' leading scorer cut inside and shot wide from 20 yards.
Rob Owen should have doubled the lead before the half-hour but, after robbing Kevin Murphy on the edge of his own area, Owen was denied by the legs of Stoner and Che Stadhart volleyed the rebound wide.
Bognor came into the game in the final minutes of the first half, their philosophy of keeping possession in non-attacking areas posing Welling few problems.
The pattern continued after the break with Bognor content on keeping the ball but failing to create many openings.
They enjoyed just two clear chances on goal, one either side of half-time. On 39 minutes, Solomon fell asleep and let in Richard Hudson who was denied by Jamie Turner.
The Wings keeper was at it again with 13 minutes left when he was at full stretch to turn away Hudson's 25-yard free-kick.
But the points were made safe when Welling substitute Steve Perkins powerfully headed in Jamie Day's perfect free-kick in the 83rd minute to send Park View Road's smallest league crowd of the season home happy.
