Matt Jarvis became the first former Gillingham trainee to appear for the senior England team following his appearance against Ghana on Tuesday night.
Jarvis (pictured in his Gillingham days), now with Wolves, came off the bench in the friendly match at Wembley Stadium, replacing Jack Wilshere on 69 minutes, for Fabio Capello’s England side. England drew the match 1-1.
The 24-year-old progressed through the Gillingham youth set-up before being handed his league debut by manager Andy Hessenthaler at the age of 17.
He left the Gills in 2007 for Wolves and since their promotion to the Premier League Jarvis has continued to improve, eventually earning him a call-up to the full England squad and a run-out on Tuesday night.
Gillingham have has scant connections with the England set-up since becoming a professional club with Freddie Fox’s appearance in 1925 being the one an only other claim to fame for the Gills.
He left the Gills, having played over 100 games for them, for Millwall around the time of his one and only cap but in the game against France he went off injured, leaving the national team to play the final 15 minutes without a recognised goalkeeper. England still won 3-2.
