A 23-year-old woman was told she couldn't buy a children's cartoon DVD...because she didn't have proof of her age!

Sophie Harrell from Repton Park, Ashford, was Christmas shopping in the town when she tried to buy a Spot the Dog DVD from the 99p Store.

But she was told she couldn't buy the universally rated cartoon about the adventures of a puppy, because she couldn't prove she was over 18.

When she asked why she was told it was store policy. Eventually a friend bought the DVD for her - but she was left embarrassed and confused.

She said: "I couldn't believe it. She said she was just doing her job, but it was ridiculous. It was quite embarrassing. My friend had to pay for me."

A spokesman for the 99p Store said there had been a computer glitch and the DVD had been programmed with the wrong classification.

He said: "The DVD was incorrectly programmed into the computer as age restricted.

"We would like to apologise unreservedly, and we are conducting a review to ensure this won't happen again. We shall be offering a complimentary range of DVDs to this shopper, along with our full apology."
